Shutterfest 2025 Exploring Dark and Moody Portraiture and Boudoir Posing Through Body Language
Last year, I had the pleasure of being invited to speak at Shutterfest for the very first time — and this year, I was back, teaching three classes and feeling more inspired than ever.
One of the highlights for me was leading a class on dark and moody lighting for portraiture — a style that feels deeply personal, raw, and full of story.
And alongside it, I taught boudoir posing through body language — another passion of mine that taps into something far deeper than traditional posing ever could.

Because if you know me, you know this:
I’m not here to chase perfection.
I’m not here to tell you to place your light at a perfect 45-degree angle or pose someone with a checklist of hand placements.
I’m here to teach you to feel.
To see beyond the technical.
To create portraits and boudoir imagery that moves people — and that starts by trusting light, trusting body language, and trusting yourself.
And seeing you all embrace that during my Shutterfest classes was absolutely unforgettable.

Dark and Moody Light in Portraiture: Why It Matters
Portraiture is about connection.
It’s about capturing something beneath the surface — not just what someone looks like, but who they are.
Using dark and moody lighting allows us to:
- Sculpt depth and dimension into every frame
- Invite emotion through light and shadow
- Create cinematic, timeless portraits that pull viewers in
- Use imperfection and mystery as part of the storytelling
When we stop trying to make everything look “perfect” and start letting the light breathe and speak, portraits transform from images into experiences.
Boudoir Posing Through Body Language: A Different Approach
In my boudoir class, we didn’t chase rigid posing systems.
We focused on body language — the small shifts, the subtle movements, the way emotion lives inside the body when you create a safe, open space for it.
Because in boudoir photography, it’s not about striking the “right” pose.
It’s about creating a feeling — vulnerability, confidence, softness, power — all without forcing it.
Body language allows us to:
- Capture genuine, unscripted emotions
- Guide our subjects to relax and connect with themselves
- Tell richer, more authentic stories through movement
- Empower our clients to feel seen — and celebrated
Watching the attendees in this class lean into a more intuitive, emotional way of directing their clients was honestly one of the most powerful experiences of my entire time at Shutterfest.

Shutterfest: More Than a Conference — It’s a Movement
Shutterfest isn’t just a place to learn — it’s a place to evolve.
It’s where you can ditch the rules, follow curiosity, and create work that feels like you.
Sal Cincotta and Alissa Cincotta from Shutterfest are outdoing themselves with this amazing conference.
Thank you for all your hard work.
This year, I saw photographers get brave.
I saw them choose feeling over formulas.
I saw them create magic by trusting themselves — and their light — more deeply than ever before.
And it reminded me why I love this work so much.

Thank You, Shutterfest Community
Thank you to every single one of you who attended my classes, trusted the process, and showed up with your whole heart.
You inspire me endlessly.
And if you take just one thing away from our time together, let it be this:
Chase the feeling, not the perfection.
Let the light guide you.
Let the body speak.
And create portraits and boudoir art that doesn’t just look beautiful — it feels unforgettable.
Until next year, Shutterfest.
I’m already counting down the days.
