How to Direct Clients During a Photoshoot (Without Feeling Awkward)
If you’ve ever been in a shoot and thought…
“What do I even say right now?”
You’re not alone.
Most photographers don’t struggle with:
camera settings
lighting
editing
They struggle with this:
directing people
Because the moment your client steps in front of your camera…
Everything changes.
Now it’s not about your technical skill.
It’s about how you guide someone who doesn’t know what to do with their body.
Why directing clients feels so hard
No one really teaches this.
You learn:
- ISO
- aperture
- shutter speed
But no one shows you how to actually talk to a human being during a shoot.
So you default to:
“Okay… turn this way”
“Put your hand here”
“Chin down a little”
And it works… sometimes.
But most of the time?
It feels awkward.
For you and for them.

The difference between posing and directing
This is where everything shifts.
Posing is:
telling someone where to put their body
Directing is:
guiding someone into movement and emotion
Posing is static.
Directing is alive.
And the reason your photos feel stiff?
Is because you’re posing…
When you should be directing.
The real reason your clients feel awkward
Your client isn’t awkward.
They’re unsure.
They don’t know:
- where to put their hands
- how to stand
- what looks good
And the moment they feel unsure…
They become stiff.
Not because they’re bad in front of the camera.
But because they’re thinking too much.
The shift that changes everything
Instead of trying to “fix” your client…
Give them something to do.
Because when someone is doing something…
They stop thinking about how they look.
What to actually say during a photoshoot
Let’s make this real.
Instead of:
“Stand like this”
Say:
“Shift your weight slowly from one leg to the other”
Instead of:
“Put your hand here”
Say:
“Let your hands move naturally and don’t overthink it”
Instead of:
“Smile”
Say:
“Think about something that makes you feel safe”
Instead of:
“Look at the camera”
Say:
“Look away first… then slowly come back”
Now your client isn’t posing.
They’re responding.

If your poses have been feeling stiff, this is usually why. I break it down more here → Why Your Poses Look Stiff
Why this works better than posing
Because you’re removing pressure.
You’re not asking your client to:
“get it right”
You’re allowing them to:
move
adjust
breathe
And that’s when your photos change.
If you want to learn how to direct clients naturally and not just guess your way through a shoot, I break down my full approach to photography education here →jasminjade.com
The biggest mistake photographers make while directing
Talking too much.
Giving too many instructions.
Correcting every little detail.
That creates overwhelm.
And overwhelm shows up as stiffness.

What good direction actually feels like
It’s simple.
Calm.
Clear.
One thing at a time.
You’re not controlling your client.
You’re guiding them. You showing them.
A simple flow you can follow on every shoot
- Start with movement
- Give one direction at a time
- Let them repeat it
- Don’t interrupt constantly
- Adjust gently
That’s it.
You don’t need 50 poses.
If your client says “I’m awkward,” this approach becomes even more important. Read this next → Why Boudoir photography education is so important
Why some photographers make this look effortless
It’s not talent.
It’s not luck.
It’s that they understand how to guide people.
They’re not focused on:
what it looks like
They’re focused on:
how it feels
